All about Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa

This summer the 19th World Cup in soccer will be held by South Africa and FIFA in South Africa.

Logo for world cup soccerThe 19th World Cup in soccer will unfold in 2010 between 11 june and 11 july in South Africa. Prior to this 204 national teams have competed in a qualification process since summer 2007 resulting in 32 teams being ready to meet heads up in the world cup.

The final draw

The configuration of the teams in groups was solved with a draw staged in Cape Town on the 4th of December, 2009. Every group configuration was up to chance except the South Africa national soccer team, which was already placed as the first team in Group A.

History of World Cup in Soccer

The Trophy in FIFA World CupThere's been held 18 previous world cups in soccer since 1930. The cup is held every 4th year and has only been interrupted by World War 2 in 1942 and 1946.

Seven different nations has won the world cup trophy since then, with Brazil having the record of five victories. Next comes Italy with four victories (including the current from 2006) and Germany with three world cup titles.

All previous tournament results

From 1930 to 2006 we have had 18 world cup tournaments in soccer, and all the results in the finals and third place matches are listed below:

  • 1930 World Cup held in Uruguay:
    • Winner was Uruguay playing 4–2 against Argentina in the final.
    • United States came in third winning the semi final against Yugoslavia
  • 1934 World Cup held in Italy
    • Italy won the final 2–1 against Czechoslovakia
    • Germany played 3–2 against Austria winning the third place match
  • 1938 World Cup held in France:
    • Italy won their second cup final 4–2 against Hungary
    • Brazil came third winning 4–2 against Sweden in the semi final
  • 1950 World Cup held in Brazil
    • Uruguay won the cup playing against Brazil in the final
    • Sweden won the semi final against Spain
  • 1954 World Cup held in Switzerland
    • West Germany played 3–2 against Hungary winning their first soccer world cup.
    • Austria came in third playing 3–1 against Uruguay
  • 1958 World Cup held in Sweden
    • Brazil won their first final victory playing 5–2 against the cup host Sweden
    • France played 6–3 against West Germany in the third place match.
  • 1962 World Cup in Chile
    • Brazil took their second championship playing 3–1 against Czechoslovakia
    • In the semi final Chile beat Yugoslavia with the score 1–0
  • 1966 World Cup in England<
    • England won the final as host in this legendary match playing 4–2 against their arch-enemy Germany
    • In the third place match Portugal took a 2–1 victory against USSR
  • 1970 World Cup held in Mexico
    • Brazil won the final and their third world cup championship against Italy 4–1
    • West Germany played 1–0 against Uruguay in the semi final
  • 1974 World Cup in West Germany
    • West Germany played 2–1 against Netherlands winning their second cup final
    • Poland beat Brazil 1–0 in the third place match
  • 1978 World Cup in Argentina
    • Argentina won as host 3–1 against Netherlands
    • Brazil took a 2–1 victory against Italy in third place match
  • 1982 World Cup in Spain
    • Italy won their third cup playing 3–1 against West Germany
    • Poland beat France 3–2 in the semi final.
  • 1986 World Cup in Mexico (2nd time)
    • Argentina took the victory in the final against West Germany playing 3-2
    • France won the semi final against Belgium with the score 4–2
  • 1990 World Cup in Italy (2nd time)
    • West Germany won their third cup final playing 1–0 against Argentina
    • Italytook a third place home playing 2–1 against England
  • 1994 World Cup in United States
    • Brazil played 0–0 in ordinary time and won (3–2) in penalty shoot-out against Italy
    • Sweden won the semi final 4–0 against Bulgaria
  • 1998 World Cup in France (2nd time)
    • France, this years host, won the final with a 3–0 score against Brazil
    • Croatia took third place winning 2–1 against Netherlands
  • 2002 World Cup in South Korea & Japan
    • Brazil took their current record of five world cup victories playing 2–0 against Germany in the final
    • Turkey played 3–2 against Korea Republic and won the third place match
  • 2006 World Cup in Germany (2nd time)
    • Italy played 1–1 aganst France in ordinary time, and won the penalty shoot-out 5–3
    • France took home third place playing semi final against Germany with the score 3–1
